Depending on the results of this confrontation, you'll receive more or less coins to spend on new troops or improve the ones you already have. Battles are divided into two phases: in the first phase you choose which troops you want to deploy and how you want to arrange them on the battlefield, while in the second you see how combat against your enemy unfolds. The combat system in Auto Chess is relatively complex, although it is not very difficult to learn. During online battles the player who gets the best score when all the matches are over is proclaimed the winner. Plus, it’s free, so if you’re not a fan, you didn’t lose anything but a few hours of your free time.Auto Chess is a real-time strategic dueling game where players face off against each other over the Internet or practice against AI. What I initially thought would be subpar at best turned out to be a legitimately engaging experience that I already have far more hours than I’m willing to admit in. If you’re a fan of strategy games and cute animals, I cannot recommend Super Auto Pets enough. And there’s plenty to see, with more than 50 pets and an expansion pack out that adds even more, I can see myself firing this up every so often before realizing “Oh my god, I’ve spent another 3 hours playing this game, where did my evening go?” Verdict And this depth and variety lends itself to plenty of strategies, which gives this game a lot of replayability, just to see everything and suss out what works. For example, the Ant gives a random pet on your side a stat boost when it faints, the Mosquito deals damage to a random enemy pet at the start of the battle, and the Pig gives you extra gold when sold. Nearly every pet has an ability that plays into where you should position them in your lineup or how you use them. Now, while I explained it rather succinctly, what really takes the game to a whole other level in my opinion is the amount of depth. I think it would be nice to add some sort of spectate feature, but it’s not the end of the world. One gripe I had about Versus Mode is upon losing, you just sort of…get sent back to the main menu, jarringly. You battle a random player, the loser loses some of their lives, you go back to the shop, rinse and repeat. In Versus Mode, you and up to 3 other players all have a set number of lives which still go down as you lose, same as Arena, however, instead of getting to 10 wins, your goal is to be the last team standing. Lose all your lives, and you start back from square one. If you lose, you lose an amount of lives which increases as you get further. It sounds like a mouthful but it makes sense in-game. ![]() This process repeats until there is only one team (or none!) left standing. The attack phase works simple as can be, the pets at the front of each side attack each other simultaneously, reducing the HP of the opposing pet by their attack, with any stat adjustments or abilities applied accordingly. In Arena Mode, your team then faces off against another user’s team on the same turn as you, and the attack phase begins. Here is where I should mention there’s two modes, Arena Mode and Versus Mode. ![]() Once your gold is exhausted, you send your pets off to battle. You start with a supply of gold which you can then use to purchase pets, which serve as your units, or food, which upgrades your pets’ stats or gives them an additional ability, like summoning a pet on death. GameplayĪs an auto battler, the key to Super Auto Pets lies in strategy. Yet, I think this sort of simple, less-is-more approach doesn’t hurt the game at all, as it draws more emphasis to mechanical side of things, showing that you can still have engaging gameplay without flashy visuals or brilliant orchestral soundtracks. From a music and sounds standpoint, it doesn’t go too over the top, simple sound effects, like the noise a corresponding pet makes when you purchase one, your standard punch sounds when they attack, and so on.
